GREY

-Ishana Ghosh

There were these hurricanes and storms
that came rushing to cripple her,
and she let them be her guest,
but only for a while, as she soon
turned herself from sand, clay, rock
to something that wouldn't waiver or sway.
A while ago, it felt they were here to stay
but now, as the mist lifted off,
she saw they were gone already, so
she could fight and she could ' say '.
But even before her voice could rise,
a strong wind hit her face with rebuke
and she was forced to listen yet once again.
This time though, the voices ran
with the flow of blood through her veins
and the painted sky made sure
to make it look like a welcoming embrace.
The clouds reflected her passions and dreams
and the water showed her how reality seems.
But it was those rustling leaves
in the serene greenery, that got the
greatest attention, for her eyes
were wide open, devouring everything
they could possibly see.

And yet, all the while, she made sure
to keep herself at bay, so as to
not flow away, and to stand straight
despite whatever came her way.
She denied herself the chance
to respond to the beckon of warmth,
afraid to give in to her weaker self,
which talked of how everything and everyone
could be the means for good to be done.
Thus, she stood resilient, and
in the process, she embraced darkness
in order to be dealt a fair hand
in the fight which was to ensue.
But alas! She was all too naive.
So, the sun moved on, even if
she couldn't, and it was
pitch dark, all of a sudden.
Rain came down, and
unleashed what was hidden.
And then, thunder struck!
Rage and fury coursed through
the night sky, and those bolts
which hit the earth, were like
blinding waves of euphoria
for the darkness to come to light.
And she, who had frantically
screamed that she was strong enough
for whatever there was to come,
found herself drawn to it,
as if it was her inner soul
wanting to break free.
Her mind was at war with itself,
with logic and emotions coursing through,
but the pull was too strong for her
to contemplate and think through.
So, she took a step forward
and just then, and not a moment before,
it hit her like a reawakening
that she was not this petty girl
who had been taught to give in.
And just as she thought
she could make peace and live a life
which sang of love and forgiveness,
she was struck for real,
by a bolt of lightning
that froze her veins.

Thank you for reading....

P.S. :
This is about how a person fights against all hardships that come to conquer him or her.

The use of the word 'she' becomes relevant as in modern day world, women kind is seen to rise strong, defying the stereotype of them being ruled by 'not seen but heard'. There is no end to the hardships that come in our lives and how much we pretend to be strong and unbreakable in front of others, there's always this part of us that is vulnerable and weak and this, we hide. We reject anything that could bring out that side and so we live under this false pretense of an unbreakable shell.

In life, we turn our back to opportunities either because we believe we don't deserve those or we are afraid to lose sight of our hatred towards those who have wronged us if we embrace optimism and goodness. In avenging ourselves, we often loose sight of the real motive, that is standing for good, and our character becomes influenced by this negativity and it changes us for the worse.

There is good and bad in each of us and there's an everlasting war between the two at all times. We live in the grey region, undecided whether to give in to the darkness in us or put in an effort and try to be better and live better lives.

But there is only so much time for a thing to be done and a decision to be taken. We can never stop the inevitable from happening but all we can do is choose the right path. We need to accept that we need help when we do and we must not let negativity or indecision get the better of us.
